Keep reading to find out more.

A broad Palliative Medicine training programme

When you train in Palliative Medicine in the East Midlands you'll benefit from a broad range of training in different settings including hospitals, hospices and community based facilities. Settings include NHS facilities and independent hospices.

Thanks to the careful way that the training is structured you'll also get a range of experiences while keeping your travelling and commuting to a minimum. As well as hospice and hospital based posts you'll also be involved in community care and carrying out domiciliary visits.

The East Midlands area is divided into a North and a South Carousel, to try and minimise commuting, with residents rotating each year at the start of August. The North carousel includes Derby, Nottingham, Lincoln, Mansfield & Chesterfield.  The South carousel includes Northampton, Kettering & Leicester.

You will dual accredit with General Internal Medicine (GIM).  Time will be spent within each training year based in GIM within Leicester (South carousel) , Nottingham and Derby (North carousel).  Residents have recently enjoyed GIM placements within diabetes & endocrine, respiratory, health care of the elderly, and renal.

Develop your career with lots of unique opportunities

As well as broad Palliative Medicine training in the East Midlands you'll also be encouraged to undertake an Out of Programme Experience. You'll be supported in this decision and recent trainees have experienced palliative medicine in Cameroon, New Zealand and Tanzania. If you are looking for an out of programme experience closer to home, recent residents have undertaken a leadership and management fellowship, a Parkinson's disease fellowship and time in Oncology.

The East Midlands is also perfect if you're looking for research opportunities. There are research opportunities throughout the region to enable you to develop a sound knowledge of the process of research with the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of local studies. You'll be part of recruitment for national/international trials and there are opportunities to write and contribute to published articles.

In addition, you will have a multitude of opportunities to be involved in teaching - both in terms of planning and delivery. You'll benefit from a dedicated palliative medicine ' teaching day per month in which you will be involved in planning your own training. There are also 6 GIM teaching days per year, as well as human factors and simulation training.  We also have consultant leads for our training programme providing guidance and teaching on preparing for your SCE (Speciality Certificate Examination).

The East Midlands - affordable homes, world-class sport and superb links to the UK and beyond

"One of the reasons I applied to work in the East Midlands North is that it is a relatively small deanery area geographically. It's essential to keep a good work/ life balance to be able to cope with the inevitable stresses that work can provide, and I have been fortunate to live in Nottingham throughout my training, commuting to my placements around the deanery" JW Resident doctor

Major cities such as Nottingham, Leicester, Derby and Lincoln offer a wealth of days and nights out while the region is full of museums, galleries, world-class concert venues and beautiful countryside.

House prices in the East Midlands are 44% lower than the Southeast and 62% lower than London and a superb rail and road network mean Birmingham and London are just over an hour away.
