Approval process to become a Midlands GP educational supervisor for foundation resident doctors

If you are interested in clinically supervising foundation doctors on a placement in GP and are already an Educational Supervisor (ES), you can complete the refresher training to equip you with the skills to undertake supervised learning events. You can also manage the Horus portfolio.

The approval process is as follows:

  1. Hold an informal discussion with the Training Programme Director (TPD) or Associate Dean.
  2. Apply for the GP ES Course.
  3. Complete the GP ES Course (additional requirements may include online learning and peer feedback).
  4. Complete the online Midlands GP Trainer registration form (Primary Care Community Team (PCCT) will send an email with the required documents).
  5. Send the required documents to the Associate Dean, and arrange a visit.
  6. Once approved, the Associate Dean will inform PCCT and the local Training Hub (PCCT will update the General Medical Council (GMC) register to reflect trainer status and set up 14Fish access).

Staying up to date as an educator supervisor in the East Midlands

Your educator role should form part of your annual appraisal, and you should undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to keep updated and current.

Please ensure you are on the mailing list with your local training programme and the foundation programme (if appropriate) so that you receive information and invites to educator events, including workshops and conferences.

Attendance at Annual Review of Competency and Progression (ARCP) panels is also important — contact your local training programme for more information.

Supervisor refresher training for existing trainers will continue to be offered online three times a year.  The morning is for GP training and covers workplace-based assessments and the 14Fish portfolio. The afternoon covers foundation training, supervised learning events and the Horus portfolio.

Please see below for details of how to book your chosen date via Accent Course Manager.  You must be working a minimum of four sessions as an existing ES or CS to be eligible for the course. Please do not share links to the course with other GPs – all attendees must book on via Accent Course Manager to control course numbers and provide some governance. Reapproval in the East Midlands

From 19 June 2025, the GMC no longer requires formal reapproval of trainers every five years as a minimum. In line with this, to ensure the continued delivery of quality supervision per our duties as the Local Education Provider (LEP).

The Midlands GP Schools are moving to an annual affirmation survey where all current GP educators confirm their continued status as a trainer, along with their attendance at educational activities to continue development as a trainer. Other information relevant to maintaining their recognition. Senior educators are developing the form from the East and West Midlands GP Schools, and we anticipate launching it soon.

East Midlands learning environment approval process for GP training

From June 2025, a learning environment (LE) approval process must be completed for any LE not previously approved for GP training. Practices that have previously been approved for GP training and currently host GP resident doctors are not required to undertake the LE approval process.
