Background
NHS England’s Enhance programme is an educational offer designed to equip healthcare professionals with enhanced generalist skills to work in an increasingly challenging health system. This complexity arises from three main areas:
- Increased clinical complexity – patients are living longer with high multimorbidity.
- Increased societal complexity –access to healthcare and environmental sustainability.
- Increasing system complexity – more layers and levels of management than ever before, with blurred boundaries between primary and secondary care.
In response to these challenges, the Enhance programme aims to create a future workforce with a greater understanding of local health priorities and the healthcare system in which we work.
Enhance Enable
Enhance Enable is open to all Foundation doctors in England and provides an overview of the core Enhance domains. It involves self-directed learning via the postgraduate virtual learning environment (PGVLE). The six domains cover:
- Person-centred practice
- Complex multimorbidity
- System working
- Population health
- Social justice and health inequality
- Environmental sustainability
Through these domains, Enhance Enable aims to equip Foundation trainees with a broader understanding of local health priorities, population health and leadership skills.
Completion of Enhance Enable requires a reflection for each module on the Horus e-portfolio via ‘REAL’ forms, as well as the feedback forms on the PGVLE. It is expected to require around 4 hours per module to complete.
Enhance Explore
Enhance explore is a more unique opportunity to apply this learning into practice. It is a specialised programme with bespoke clinical placements. These posts are being piloted from August 2024 and F2s will be contacted individually if rotating into one of these posts.
This will look different across the country, but in the East Midlands it will be focussed on the community placement of FY2:
Enhance-linked posts: For some placements, such as General Practice, this may involve leaving the practice for 10-15 days during the rotation and attending other community services (eg drug and alcohol liaison, homeless healthcare or community frailty teams).
Enhance-integrated posts: For other placements such as sexual health, the Enhance Explore opportunities may be embedded through the placement itself with health promotion or local outreach work.
