Why Choose the East Midlands for Your Dermatology Training?

A structured training programme, access to nationally recognised research opportunities, and a supportive training environment are just a few reasons to consider the East Midlands for your Dermatology speciality training.

Additionally, this region is one of the few places in the UK where you can gain direct clinical experience in Mohs micrographic surgery.

Research Excellence:

Nottingham is home to the internationally renowned Centre of Evidence-Based Dermatology (CEBD), which hosts the UK Dermatology Clinical Trials Network (UKDCTN).  Trainees have successfully obtained fellowships at the CEBD and secured research funding from national bodies, underscoring the region's strong academic credentials.

Dermatology Training Programmes in the East Midlands:

The East Midlands offers two separate Dermatology training programmes:

East Midlands North

Base Sites:

  • Florence Nightingale Community Hospital (FNCH) and on-call responsibilities and specialist clinics at Royal Derby Hospital (RDH), part of University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Trust (UHDB).

Rotations include:

  • Treatment Centre, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust – Adult Dermatology, tertiary Paediatric Dermatology and Mohs micrographic surgery -1 year rotation
  • Queen’s Hospital Burton, UHDB – Two 6 month rotations
  • Outpatient clinics are also carried out at various community hospitals throughout Derbyshire e.g. St. Oswald's Hospital, Ashbourne, Ilkeston Hospital, Heanor Hospital, Ripley Hospital and Long Eaton Health Centre.
  • The above  rotations will allow you to gain experience across tertiary care centres, teaching hospitals, district general hospitals, and community hospitals.

Clinical Experience and Educational Opportunities:

In addition to General Dermatology clinics, the East Midlands North training programme provides structured and timetabled specialist clinics including cutaneous allergy (patch testing), complex surgery, paediatric dermatology, vulval dermatology and lymphoedema clinics. Additionally, we run innovative ‘super clinics’ for skin cancer (https://doi.org/10.1093/ced/llae051) and tele dermatology (https://doi.org/10.1093/bjd/ljaf085.532).

There is the opportunity to teach Nottingham Medical School students in the outpatient clinics. Emergency dermatology and on call experience is gained by participating in the on-call rota at Derby and by seeing ward referrals when on rotation to Nottingham and Burton.

Teaching and Support:

Trainees benefit from:

  • The post graduate academic afternoons at Derby and Nottingham, which include dedicated histology teaching, Regional Interesting Cases Clinics, Journal Clubs, Audit and Governance meetings and regional teaching sessions with the Leicester (East Midlands South) trainees, where a wide range of topics relevant to the curriculum are covered.
  • Monthly virtual or face to face attendance at Royal Society of Medicine meetings

Trainees are actively encouraged to present at national and international meetings, with many of our trainees having won prizes for their work.

Lifestyle and Location:

If you enjoy the outdoors, Derby is the gateway to the Peak District, the UK’s first national park — ideal for weekend hiking and exploration.

All the rotations occur within a relatively small geographical area and within commutable distance.

Both Nottingham and Derby are well-connected cities (e.g., just 1 hour 30 minutes to London St Pancras from Derby by train) and offer a high quality of life, with affordable housing and a lower cost of living compared to many other UK regions.

East Midlands South

Main Sites:

  • University Hospitals of Leicester Dermatology Department, St Peter’s Health Centre and on-call responsibilities and specialist clinics at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Rotations include:

  • Kettering General Hospital – joint rotation with Leicester, for 6 months
  • Northampton General Hospital – rotation for 6 months
  • Outpatient clinics are also carried out at various community hospitals throughout Leicestershire e.g. Loughborough Hospital, Hinckley and District Hospital, and Melton Mowbray Hospital.
  • The above rotations will allow you to gain experience across tertiary care centres, teaching hospitals, district general hospitals, and community hospitals.

Clinical Experience and Educational Opportunities:

In addition to general dermatology clinics, the East Midlands South training programme provides timetabled specialist clinics including cutaneous allergy (patch testing), complex surgery including Mohs surgery, paediatric dermatology, vulval dermatology, biologics and complex medical dermatology, and cutaneous lymphoma. There is the opportunity to teach University of Leicester students in the outpatient clinics. Emergency dermatology and on call experience is gained by participating in the on-call rota at University Hospitals of Leicester.
