Supported Return to Training Trust and School Champions

champs.jpg"I passionately feel we should offer the right support to trainee and trainers hence my involvement with the regional SuppoRTT programme from the start.  We deserve fulfilled lives and careers and I think we can have that with the right planning and care".

Throughout the RTT process, trainees will have their reviews with their Educational Supervisor but if additional guidance or support is required, the SuppoRTT Champions are a fantastic resource. SuppoRTT Champions have been introduced to work with each employing Trust and specialty School within the East Midlands region to support both trainees and trainers with troubleshooting specific issues involving returning trainees in their School, Trust or GP Practice.

SuppoRTT Champions are available to liaise with the trainee, the clinical area lead and Supervisor. They will have detailed knowledge of the local and regional resources available for return to training e.g. SuppoRTT mentoring schemes, return to training events such as one-day conferences and study days, and will be able to steer trainees on what support may be beneficial.

Surgery: Mrs Cat Boereboom

catb_0.jpgI am Cat Boereboom. I trained in Sheffield and moved to Nottingham for my Surgical Training in East Midlands North. I have taken time out of training for a 2.5 year PhD into pre-operative exercise and 1 year maternity leave but have always worked fulltime. I was appointed as a colorectal and pelvic floor surgeon at Nottingham University Hospitals this year. I am married to another colorectal surgeon in the region and have a 5 year old daughter and 11 year old step daughter.

Derbyshire Healthcare Foundation Trust: Dr Amy Herford

amyh_0.jpgI qualified from Sheffield Medical School in 2001.  I went on to do Psychiatry training in Sheffield.  I have been working as a Consultant Psychiatrist in Chesterfield since 2009.  Since then I have taken 2 maternity leaves and am now working part-time.

My main clinical work is Consultant Psychiatrist in the Early Intervention Team for Psychosis.  I also take a role in organising the medical student placements and the ADME for GP Trainees.

I have continued to have an interest in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and as part of my training I have completed a Diploma in Psychometric Psychotherapy.  I now use these skills to run a Balint Group for Trainees.

I am hoping my role as SuppoRTT Champion, that I can enable trainees to confidently have breaks in their training programme for whatever reason and ensure the thinking and planning for this occurs.

kathh_0.jpgI am the SuppoRTT Champion for UHL (and also a newly appointed FTPD).  I’ve been a trainee and then consultant in Leicester for 20 years working mainly in diabetes, general medicine and acute medicine.  My current role in the speciality team is focused on inpatient diabetes care and I work across many areas in the trust.  For my whole time in UHL I have worked flexibly (3 -4 days per week) and I support the view that we are happier and more productive at work if we are supported in achieving a good work/life balance.  I’ve taken breaks from training/work to undertake a PhD as a medical student, to take 3 periods of maternity leave and also following unplanned illness.  I aim to support trainees in a safe and supported return to work following any break from training.

I am happy for any trainee returning to UHL to contact me via:  SuppoRTT@uhl-tr.nhs.uk and if I can’t answer your queries I can usually find someone who can.
